Due to the 32,000 abandoned units in the city & county of San Francisco, a tax has been proposed by Supervisor Jane Kim, that building owners either rent their properties or pay a tax. The tax would theoretically solve the city's housing problems. If the units were rented, that would also house a lot of people in the city currently houseless. About 90% of the abandoned units are liveable.
